The Colonel Knife by Campcraft Outdoors

The Colonel Knife by Campcraft Outdoors is a great bushcraft knife!

Many of us outdoor types are somewhat infatuated with knives. Many of us collect them or otherwise have many, many of them.

I wasn’t even in the market for a new knife when I got The Colonel, but once I got it in my hands, I realized its usefulness…

Knives, at least to me, aren’t just about utility, though. Knives are very personal to me, and if a knife doesn’t have “the look,” then I’m just not interested. There’s something about the curves of the blade and handle that just does it for me - or not, and The Colonel, made by Dan Ferguson and sold by Campcraft Outdoors, has “the look” for me. It just does…

Some knives, however, as sexy as they may look, are worthless pieces of garbage, so we certainly can’t judge a book by its cover. The Colonel from Campcraft Outdoors, however, doesn’t just have rugged good looks - it’s a beast of a knife made out of 1095 steel, plenty thick enough for serious batoning, a sharp spine for striking a ferrocerium rod or processing wood with the spine, and a very useful convex grind. It’s a great knife all around, but none of that matters if what I think the single most important thing about a knife isn’t present: a great handle.

In my opinion, The Colonel by Campcraft Outdoors falls into continuity with the great knives produced by Jeff White, and it’s clear to me that Dan Ferguson has continued on with the tradition of the great knives made by Jeff White - however, what stands out in stark contrast is the handle. I always found Jeff White handles to be too small around and not long enough. Your mileage may very, as everyone has different hand sizes and such, but for me, Jeff White knives had notoriously undersized handles. This is NOT the case with The Colonel! The Colonel has, for me, anyway, a perfectly sized handle.
